The exact cause of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) isn’t fully understood, but it’s often linked to reduced exposure to sunlight during the shorter autumn and winter days. The main theory is that a lack of sunlight might stop a part of the brain called the hypothalamus working properly. This is how an Intecho Smart Home can help alleviate the symptoms of SAD.
Intecho’s Home Automation systems can dramatically increase the effects of SAD by designing a bio-dynamic lighting system to provide circadian rhythm manipulation at your place of home or work. DALI tuneable white LED lights designed not only as an energy saver, but also to provide a way of influencing circadian rhythm to improve wellbeing.
Symptoms of SAD can include:
- A persistent low mood
- A loss of pleasure or interest in normal everyday activities
- Feeling lethargic (lacking in energy) and sleepy during the day
- Sleeping for longer than normal and finding it hard to get up in the morning
- Craving carbohydrates and gaining weight
Intecho can develop bio-dynamic lighting profiles and logic programming utilising various high-tech and sophisticated components, such as Zennio allowing each room to be controlled individually subject to individual requirements. Allowing either automated tuneable white and room temperature to run over a pre-set cycle, or to adjust locally via a touch screen, according to individual needs and desires. This simple user interface in each room is provided by a simple touch screen which also enables full control of the Fan Coil and ‘standard’ non bio dynamic lighting. With an additional option to install DALI Lighting to provide colour therapy.
Throughout the morning, the system can provide bright blue lighting (4,000k) which encourages a healthy appetite, increases body temperature and heart rate, and leads to greater cognitive function. As night time approaches a warmer lighting allows for calm, lower hormone levels. These profiles alter the lighting continuously throughout the day and night to provide the correct colour temperature in your smart home.
This lighting can also be used in a medical environment to aid patient recovery. Please see our Award Winning Project at The DNRC, a medical facility specifically designed and built to aid the recovery of our servicemen and women.
